Women in Science Engineering and Technology groups exist elsewhere in the UK and the world. The groups listed below have gained experience in setting up events and running a network.   Do you know of a group you would like to see included on this page?

Imperial College Women in SET. A student society organizing a series of events to encourage female students to pursue careers in science, engineering and technology. Annual events include:

  • a symposium for students interested in research and academia, with prominent women scientists on the panel
  • networking evenings with various speakers from industry, covering all science and engineering disciplines
  • workshops focusing on CV's and job applications as well as sofer skills and awareness

More information can be found on the Women in SET home page

WiSET (Women in Science, Engineering and Technology) is a network for all female students, researchers and academic staff in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences at The University of Manchester. WiSET was originally funded by the UK government to encourage more female graduates to develop careers in science, engineering and technology (SET). At the moment women are under-represented in SET and a large number of SET graduates enter non-SET careers. WiSET is now in its fourth year and has close links with the UK Resource Centre for Women in SET. Student coordinators work with staff to arrange a programme of events including social networking events with talks from inspirational scientists and engineers, industrial site visits to local companies, skills workshops and debates. The events and activities provide the opportunity for students (from foundation year to PhD), researchers and academic staff to have interdisciplinary discussions with each other and with engineers and scientists working in industry.

FAIRER (Females Actively Involved in Rewarding Engineering Roles).  FAIRER is the first women’s engineering society at the University of Bradford. FAIRER is open to all female students studying in the School of Engineering, Design & Technology. FAIRER Home Page

Birmingham’s WISTE Network.  The Birmingham’s WISTE (Women in Science, Technology and Engineering) Network was formed in May 2008.

The steering group that was set up to consider and manage the initiative, met for the first time in May 2008. The membership of this group is outlined at the end of this document.

Birmingham’s WISTE Network is for female student, led by female students at the University of Birmingham in the College of Engineering, and Physical Sciences (EPS). It is for all female students from foundation level through to higher degrees. All female students registering on these programmes will automatically become part of an emailing database.
